It is situated about 25 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. and is part of the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Charlotte Hall was 2,093.

History

The area that is now Charlotte Hall was first settled in the early 1700s by English colonists. The town was named after Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the wife of King George III. The town was officially established in 1768 and was home to a number of prominent families, including the Boarman, Briscoe, and Darnall families.
In the early 1800s, Charlotte Hall was home to a number of businesses, including a gristmill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The town also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the late 1800s, Charlotte Hall was home to a number of tobacco farms. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a canning factory, a brickyard, and a lumber mill.

Geography

Charlotte Hall is located at 38°25'45" North, 76°45'45" West (38.4292, -76.7625). The town is situated in the northern part of St. Mary’s County, about 25 miles southeast of Washington, D.C.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land. Charlotte Hall is bordered by the Patuxent River to the north and the Chesapeake Bay to the east.

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,093 people, 745 households, and 545 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 498.2 people per square mile. There were 809 housing units at an average density of 193.7 per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.2% White, 15.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.79 and the average family size was 3.25.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
