History

The area that is now Capitol Heights was originally part of a large tract of land known as the “Hunting Quarter”, which was granted to the Calvert family in 1696. The area was sparsely populated until the late 19th century, when it began to be developed as a residential suburb of Washington, D.C. The town was incorporated in 1918 and was named for its proximity to the United States Capitol.

Geography

Capitol Heights is located at 38°52′45″N 76°54′45″W (38.879167, -76.912500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Capitol Heights is largely based on its proximity to Washington, D.C. Many residents commute to the city for work, and the town is home to several government contractors and other businesses. The town is also home to several retail stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,337 people, 1,717 households, and 1,093 families residing in the town. The population density was 4,837.7 people per square mile (1,871.2/km2). There were 1,902 housing units at an average density of 2,093.3 per square mile (806.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 28.2% White, 57.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.2% from other races, and 3.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,964, and the median income for a family was $48,929. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,945. About 11.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
