Winthrop is a town located in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 6,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Augusta, Maine metropolitan statistical area.

History

Winthrop was first settled in 1774 by a group of settlers from Winthrop, Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1771 and named after the Massachusetts town. The town was originally part of the Kennebec Purchase, a large tract of land purchased from the local Native American tribes in 1752.
The town was an important center of industry in the 19th century, with several mills located along the banks of the Kennebec River. The town was also home to a large granite quarry, which provided stone for many of the buildings in the area.

Geography

Winthrop is located at 44°20'N 69°59'W (44.33, -69.98). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 27.9 square miles (72.2 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2) is water.
The town is located on the east bank of the Kennebec River, and is bordered by the towns of Readfield to the north, Wayne to the east, Monmouth to the south, and Manchester to the west.

Economy

Winthrop is a rural town with a strong agricultural base. The town is home to several farms, including dairy, beef, and poultry farms. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a lumber mill, a granite quarry, and a sawmill.
The town is also home to several large employers, including the Maine Department of Transportation, the Maine State Prison, and the Maine State Hospital.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,092 people, 2,541 households, and 1,637 families residing in the town. The population density was 217.7 people per square mile (84.2/km2). There were 2,741 housing units at an average density of 97.9 per square mile (37.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the town was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
