History

Wilton was first settled in 1774 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was originally known as “New Milford”, but was later renamed “Wilton” in honor of Sir Wilton, a British general who had served in the American Revolution. The town was incorporated in 1794.
In the 19th century, Wilton was an important center for the lumber industry. The town was home to several sawmills, and the lumber was used to build ships and other structures. The town also had a thriving agricultural industry, with dairy farms and apple orchards.

Wilton is located in western Maine, in Franklin County. It is situated on the banks of the Androscoggin River, and is bordered by the towns of Jay, Livermore, and Farmington. The town has a total area of 28.2 square miles, of which 27.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
