Washburn is a town located in Aroostook County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Presque Isle Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Washburn was first settled in 1825 by a group of settlers from New Hampshire. The town was named after William Washburn, a prominent local businessman. The first sawmill was built in 1827, and the first gristmill in 1829. The town was incorporated in 1836.
In the late 19th century, Washburn was a major lumbering center. The town was home to several sawmills, a gristmill, a shingle mill, and a planing mill. The lumber industry declined in the early 20th century, and the town's economy shifted to agriculture and small businesses.

Geography

Washburn is located in northern Aroostook County, in the center of the state. It is bordered to the north by the town of Caribou, to the east by the town of Stockholm, to the south by the town of Perham, and to the west by the town of New Sweden.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.2 square miles (91.2 km2), of which 34.9 square miles (90.5 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) is water.

Economy

The economy of Washburn is largely based on agriculture and small businesses. The town is home to several farms, as well as a number of small businesses, including a lumber mill, a sawmill, a gristmill, a shingle mill, and a planing mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,717 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 77.7 people per square mile (30.0/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 33.8 per square mile (13.1/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,964. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $21,964 for females.
