South Windham Summary

Windham, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The town was incorporated in 1762 and is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. As of the 2010 census, the town had a total population of 8,589.

History

The area that is now Windham was originally inhabited by the Abenaki people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 17th century. The town was incorporated in 1762 and was named after Windham, Connecticut.

In the 19th century, Windham was a rural farming community. The town was home to several mills, including a sawmill, gristmill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a tannery and a shoe factory.

Geography

Windham is located in southern Maine, about 10 miles north of Portland. The town is bordered by the towns of Gorham to the north, Standish to the east, Gray to the south, and Westbrook to the west.

The town is situated on the Presumpscot River, which flows through the center of town. The river is a popular spot for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.

The town is mostly rural, with a few small villages scattered throughout. The largest village is South Windham, which is located in the southern part of town.

Climate

Windham has a humid continental climate, with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. The average annual temperature is 44°F (7°C). The average annual precipitation is 43 inches (109 cm).

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,589 people, 3,093 households, and 2,323 families living in the town. The population density was 517.3 people per square mile (199.7/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 197.3 per square mile (76.1/km2).

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.

There were 3,093 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.17.

The median age in the town was 38.3 years. 26.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.7% were from 25 to 44; 28.7% were from 45 to 64; and 12.2% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 49.2% male and 50.8% female.
