Searsport Summary

Searsport is a town located in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,615 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Belfast, Maine Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Searsport was first settled in 1763 by John Sears, who was granted a large tract of land by the Massachusetts General Court. The town was incorporated in 1845 and named after Sears.
Searsport was a major port for the shipping of lumber and granite in the 19th century. The town was home to several granite quarries, which provided stone for many of the buildings in Boston. The town also had a thriving fishing industry, and was home to several shipbuilding yards.

Geography

Searsport is located at 44°25′N 68°59′W (44.4133, -68.9833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 27.7 square miles (71.6 km2) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Searsport’s economy is largely based on tourism and fishing. The town is home to several marinas, which attract visitors from all over the world. The town also has a thriving lobster fishing industry, and is home to several seafood processing plants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,619 people, 1,072 households, and 717 families residing in the town. The population density was 94.3 people per square mile (36.4/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 42.5 per square mile (16.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.27% African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.3% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,964. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
