Presque Isle Summary

History

The area now known as Presque Isle, Maine was first inhabited by the Mi’kmaq people, who were part of the Wabanaki Confederacy. The Mi’kmaq were a semi-nomadic people who lived off the land, hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants. They were also known for their skill in basket-weaving and canoe-building. The Mi’kmaq were the first to encounter the French explorers who arrived in the area in the late 1600s. The French were looking for a route to the Pacific Ocean and were the first Europeans to settle in the area.
