Orono Summary
Orono, Maine is a town located in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. It is situated on the Penobscot River, approximately 12 miles (19 km) south of Bangor. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. Orono is home to the University of Maine, the state's flagship university.
History
The area that is now Orono was once inhabited by the Penobscot people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1774, and the town was incorporated in 1796. The town was named after Chief Joseph Orono, a Penobscot leader.
In the 19th century, Orono was a center of lumber and shipbuilding. The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad was built through the town in 1871, and the University of Maine was established in 1865.
Geography
Orono is located at 44°51′N 68°41′W (44.851, -68.683). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.3 square miles (62.8 km2), of which 23.6 square miles (61.1 km2) is land and 0.7 square miles (1.7 km2) is water.
Economy
Orono is home to the University of Maine, the state's flagship university. The university is the largest employer in the town, and it is a major economic driver for the region. The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 19.9% under the age of 18, 20.5% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,919, and the median income for a family was $58,945. Males had a median income of $40,945 versus $30,890 for females.
