Oakland Summary
Oakland is a town located in Kennebec County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,941 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Augusta, Maine, metropolitan statistical area.
History
The area that is now Oakland was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1802 and named after the English city of Oakland.
In the 19th century, Oakland was a center of the lumber industry. The town was home to several sawmills and gristmills, as well as a tannery. The town also had a thriving shipbuilding industry, with several vessels being built in the town.
Geography
Oakland is located at 44°25′N 69°51′W (44.4133, -69.8500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.0 km2), of which, 27.9 square miles (72.2 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) of it (1.02%) is water.
Economy
Oakland’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including potatoes, corn, and hay. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and a few manufacturing companies.
Tourism is also an important part of the town’s economy. Oakland is home to several lakes and rivers, which attract visitors from all over the state. The town is also home to several parks and recreational areas, which are popular with visitors.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,941 people, 1,214 households, and 817 families residing in the town. The population density was 105.2 people per square mile (40.6/km2). There were 1,312 housing units at an average density of 46.9 per square mile (18.1/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,214 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females.
