Newport is a town located in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor metropolitan statistical area.

History

The area that is now Newport was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1816 and named after Newport, Rhode Island.
In the 19th century, Newport was a center of lumbering and shipbuilding. The town was home to several sawmills, gristmills, and a shipyard. The town also had a thriving fishing industry.

Geography

Newport is located at 44°37′N 68°59′W (44.619, -68.983). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 27.9 square miles (72.2 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2) of it (1.09%) is water.

Economy

Newport’s economy is largely based on the lumber and fishing industries. The town is home to several sawmills, gristmills, and a shipyard. The town also has a thriving fishing industry.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 66.1 people per square mile (25.5/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 29.2 per square mile (11.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.11% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $35,625. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,945.
