Naples Summary
Naples is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,297 at the 2010 census. Naples is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.
History
The area that is now Naples was first settled in 1774 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1786 and named after Naples, Italy. The town was originally part of Bridgton, but was set off and incorporated in 1786.
Geography
Naples is located at the northern end of Long Lake, which is part of the Songo River watershed. The town is bordered by Bridgton to the north, Casco to the east, Sebago to the south, and Harrison to the west.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.2 square miles (91.2 km2), of which, 33.2 square miles (86.0 km2) of it is land and 2.0 square miles (5.2 km2) of it (5.67%) is water.
Economy
Naples is a rural community with a strong agricultural base. The town is home to several farms, including the Naples Winery, which produces a variety of wines from locally grown grapes. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a general store, a hardware store, and a variety of restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 2,297 people, 945 households, and 645 families residing in the town. The population density was 69.4 people per square mile (26.8/km2). There were 1,072 housing units at an average density of 32.3 per square mile (12.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
