History
The town of Mars Hill, Maine is located in Aroostook County, in the northernmost part of the state. It is situated on the Canadian border, and is the northernmost town in the United States. The town was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was named after the nearby Mars Hill Mountain, which was named after the Roman god of war, Mars.
The town was originally a farming community, and the main crops grown were potatoes, oats, and hay. The town also had a sawmill, a gristmill, and a blacksmith shop. In the late 1800s, the town began to develop a lumber industry, and by the early 1900s, it was one of the largest lumber producers in the state.
The town was also home to a number of small businesses, including a general store, a post office, a hotel, and a bank. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the rest of the state.
In the early 1900s, the town began to experience a decline in its population, as many of the residents moved away to find work in other parts of the state. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500 people.
