Madawaska Summary

Madawaska, Maine is a small town located in Aroostook County, in the northernmost part of the state. It is situated on the Canada–US border, and is the only town in the United States that is directly connected to a Canadian province. The town has a population of 4,035, according to the 2010 census.

History

Madawaska was first settled in the early 1800s by French-Canadian immigrants. The town was originally known as “St. David”, and was part of the Madawaska Settlement, which was a French-speaking community. The town was officially incorporated in 1859, and was named after the Madawaska River, which flows through the area.
In the late 1800s, the town became a major lumbering center, and the economy was largely based on the lumber industry. The town was also home to a number of paper mills, which provided employment for many of the town’s residents.
In the early 1900s, the town began to experience a decline in the lumber industry, and the paper mills began to close. This led to a period of economic decline in the town, and many of the residents moved away in search of better opportunities.

Geography

Madawaska is located in the northernmost part of Maine, and is situated on the Canada–US border. The town is bordered by the St. John River to the east, and the Madawaska River to the west. The town is located in a rural area, and is surrounded by forests and lakes.
The town has a total area of 8.2 square miles, and has a population density of 495.7 people per square mile. The town is located in a humid continental climate zone, and has cold winters and warm summers.

Economy

The economy of Madawaska is largely based on the lumber and paper industries. The town is home to a number of lumber mills, and the paper mills are still in operation. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and other services.
