Hampden, Maine is a town located in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 5,139 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor, Maine metropolitan statistical area.

History

Hampden was first settled in 1794 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was named after the English statesman and philosopher John Hampden. The town was incorporated in 1812.

Geography

Hampden is located at 44°47'N 68°51'W (44.78, -68.85). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 27.9 square miles (72.2 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9 km2) of it (1.09%) is water.

Economy

Hampden is home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a paper mill, a plastics factory, and a metal fabrication plant. The town also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5,139 people, 2,039 households, and 1,420 families residing in the town. The population density was 183.9 people per square mile (71.1/km2). There were 2,150 housing units at an average density of 77.1 per square mile (29.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.90% White, 0.20% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.05% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.51% of the population.
There were 2,039 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
