Fryeburg Summary

Fryeburg is a town located in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,383 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. Fryeburg is home to Fryeburg Academy, a private preparatory school, and the Fryeburg Fair, the state's largest agricultural fair.

History

Fryeburg was first settled in 1762 by Captain Joseph Frye, a veteran of the French and Indian War. Frye was granted the township by the Massachusetts General Court in 1777. Fryeburg was incorporated on June 18, 1777, making it the oldest town in Oxford County.
The town was named after Frye, who was a major landowner in the area. Fryeburg was the site of a major battle during the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Fryeburg, which was fought on October 8, 1781. The battle was a victory for the British, who were led by Colonel Thomas Brown.

Fryeburg is located in western Oxford County, bordered by the towns of Brownfield to the north, Denmark to the east, Lovell to the south, and Stow and Chatham, New Hampshire, to the west. Fryeburg is situated in the foothills of the White Mountains, and is drained by the Saco River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 40.2sqmi, of which 39.9sqmi is land and 0.3sqmi is water.

Fryeburg is a rural town with a largely agricultural economy. The town is home to several farms, including the Fryeburg Fairgrounds, which hosts the annual Fryeburg Fair. The fair is the largest agricultural fair in the state of Maine, and attracts thousands of visitors each year.
