It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. Fryeburg is home to Fryeburg Academy, a private preparatory school, and the Fryeburg Fair, the state's largest agricultural fair.

History

Fryeburg was first settled in 1762 by Captain Joseph Frye, a veteran of the French and Indian War. Frye was granted the township by the Massachusetts General Court in 1777. Fryeburg was incorporated on June 18, 1777, making it the oldest town in Oxford County.
The town was named after Frye, who was a major landowner in the area. Fryeburg was the site of a major battle during the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Fryeburg, which was fought on October 8, 1781. The battle was a victory for the British, who were led by Colonel Thomas Brown.

Geography

Fryeburg is located in western Oxford County, bordered by the towns of Brownfield to the north, Denmark to the east, Lovell to the south, and Stow and Chatham, New Hampshire, to the west. Fryeburg is situated in the foothills of the White Mountains, and is drained by the Saco River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 40.2sqmi, of which 39.9sqmi is land and 0.3sqmi is water.

There were 990 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
