Falmouth Summary
Falmouth, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area. The population was 11,185 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Falmouth was first settled in 1658 by Edward Godfrey and his family. The town was incorporated in 1718 and named after Falmouth, Cornwall, England. The town was part of North Yarmouth until 1786 when it was set off and incorporated as Falmouth.
In the 19th century, Falmouth was a popular summer resort for wealthy Portlanders. The town was home to several large summer estates, including the historic Winslow-Bailey House, which was built in 1810 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geography
Falmouth is located at 43°41'N 70°14'W (43.68, -70.23). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.7 km2), of which, 22.7 square miles (58.8 km2) of it is land and 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) of it (6.17%) is water.
Economy
The economy of Falmouth is largely based on tourism and retail. The town is home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and galleries. The town is also home to several large employers, including the Maine Medical Center, the Maine Department of Transportation, and the Maine Turnpike Authority.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,185 people, 4,541 households, and 3,072 families residing in the town. The population density was 489.3 people per square mile (189.2/km2). There were 4,845 housing units at an average density of 213.7 per square mile (82.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 95.3% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $60,938, and the median income for a family was $71,944. Males had a median income of $50,917 versus $37,917 for females.
