Ellsworth, Maine is a city located in Hancock County, Maine, United States. It is the county seat of Hancock County and the largest city in the county. The population was 7,741 at the 2010 census. Ellsworth is located on the Union River, which empties into Union Bay and then into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the commercial center of Hancock County and the gateway to the Downeast region of Maine.
History
The area that is now Ellsworth was first settled in 1763 by Thomas and Joseph Lunt. The town was incorporated in 1794 and named after Colonel Joseph Ellsworth, a Revolutionary War hero. Ellsworth was a major shipbuilding center in the 19th century, and the city was home to several shipyards. The city was also a major lumber port, and the lumber industry was a major employer in the area.
In the early 20th century, Ellsworth was a popular tourist destination, and the city was home to several hotels and resorts. The city was also home to several factories, including a paper mill, a canning factory, and a shoe factory.
Geography
Ellsworth is located at 44°33′N 68°27′W (44.55, -68.45). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.
Economy
Ellsworth is the commercial center of Hancock County and the gateway to the Downeast region of Maine. The city is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill, a canning factory, and a shoe factory.
The city is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Union River Boat Company, which offers boat tours of the Union River, and the Maine Maritime Museum, which is located in the city's historic downtown.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 7,741 people, 3,093 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 710.3 people per square mile (274.3/km2). There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 302.7 per square mile (117.0/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
