Dixfield Summary

Dixfield is a town located in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lewiston-Auburn, Maine metropolitan statistical area.

History

The area that is now Dixfield was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1803 and named after General Joseph Dix, a Revolutionary War hero.
In the 19th century, Dixfield was a thriving industrial center, with several mills and factories located along the Androscoggin River. The town was also home to a large granite quarry, which provided stone for many of the buildings in the area.

Geography

Dixfield is located in western Oxford County, bordered by the towns of Peru to the north, Canton to the east, Carthage to the south, and Mexico to the west. The Androscoggin River forms the northern border of the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles (86.1 km2), of which 32.9 square miles (85.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Economy

Dixfield is a rural community with a strong agricultural base. The town is home to several farms, including dairy, beef, and poultry operations.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a lumber mill, a sawmill, and a granite quarry.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,541 people, 1,072 households, and 690 families residing in the town. The population density was 77.2 people per square mile (29.8/km2). There were 1,179 housing units at an average density of 35.8 per square mile (13.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.83.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $41,964. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,945.
