Damariscotta is a town located in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,218 at the 2010 census. It is the commercial center of the midcoast region of Maine. The town includes the villages of South Damariscotta, West Damariscotta, and Damariscotta Mills.

History

The area that is now Damariscotta was first settled in 1625 by the English explorer George Waymouth. The town was incorporated in 1763 and named after the Damariscotta River, which was named by the Abenaki Indians. The river was named for the sturgeon that were abundant in the river.
The town was an important port in the early 19th century, and was the site of a major shipbuilding industry. The town was also a center of the granite industry, with several quarries in the area.

Geography

Damariscotta is located at the head of the Damariscotta River, which empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The town is bordered by the towns of Newcastle to the north, Bristol to the east, and South Bristol to the south.
The town has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 22.7 square miles is land and 1.5 square miles is water. The town is located on the coast of Maine, and is part of the Midcoast region.

Economy

The economy of Damariscotta is largely based on tourism and the service industry. The town is a popular destination for tourists, and is home to several restaurants, shops, and galleries. The town is also home to several marinas, which provide services to boaters.
The town is also home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a boat building company, and a granite quarry.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,218 people, 945 households, and 590 families residing in the town. The population density was 97.3 people per square mile. There were 1,039 housing units at an average density of 45.7 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $27,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,945. About 6.2% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
