Bucksport Summary

Bucksport is a town located in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 4,936 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bangor metropolitan statistical area.

History

The area that is now Bucksport was first settled in 1762 by Jonathan Buck, who was granted a large tract of land by the Massachusetts General Court. The town was incorporated in 1792 and named after Buck.
Bucksport was a major port in the 19th century, with a large shipbuilding industry. The town was also home to a large granite quarry, which provided stone for many of the buildings in the area.

Geography

Bucksport is located at 44°37′N 68°52′W (44.619, -68.867). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.6 km2), of which, 22.7 square miles (58.8 km2) of it is land and 1.5 square miles (3.8 km2) of it (6.17%) is water.
