Brunswick Summary

Brunswick, Maine is a town located in Cumberland County, Maine, United States. It is the county seat of Cumberland County and the home of Bowdoin College. The population was 20,278 at the 2010 census. Brunswick is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.

History

The area now known as Brunswick was originally inhabited by the Abenaki Indians. The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1628, and the town was officially incorporated in 1739. The town was named after the German duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the ancestral home of King George III.
During the American Revolution, Brunswick was the site of a major naval battle between the British and the Americans. The Battle of Brunswick was fought on June 25, 1775, and resulted in a British victory.
In the 19th century, Brunswick was a major shipbuilding center. The town was home to several shipyards, including the Percy & Small Shipyard, which built the USS Maine, the first battleship of the United States Navy.

Geography

Brunswick is located at 43°55′N 69°57′W (43.914, -69.948). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.1 km2), of which, 27.7 square miles (71.7 km2) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) of it (1.77%) is water.

Economy

Brunswick is home to several major employers, including Bowdoin College, Bath Iron Works, and the Brunswick Naval Air Station. The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 20,278 people, 8,093 households, and 4,845 families residing in the town. The population density was 730.3 people per square mile (282.2/km2). There were 8,837 housing units at an average density of 319.7 per square mile (123.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 1.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 8,093 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 20.2% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,876, and the median income for a family was $58,837. Males had a median income of $40,890 versus $30,890 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,945. About 6.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
