Brewer, Maine is a city located in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. It is situated on the Penobscot River, just across from Bangor, and is part of the Bangor metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 9,482.
History
Brewer was first settled in 1760 by William Brewer, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was incorporated in 1790 and named after him. Brewer was originally part of the town of Orrington, but was set off and incorporated as a separate town in 1790. In 1812, Brewer was incorporated as a city.
Brewer was an important port in the 19th century, and was home to several shipbuilding yards. The city was also a major center for the lumber industry, and was home to several sawmills and gristmills.
Geography
Brewer is located at 44°49'N 68°47'W (44.817, -68.783). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.
Economy
Brewer is home to several large employers, including Eastern Maine Medical Center, Bangor Savings Bank, and the University of Maine. The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 9,482 people, 4,072 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 871.2 people per square mile (336.7/km2). There were 4,407 housing units at an average density of 403.3 per square mile (155.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 4,072 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
