Bingham Summary

Bingham is a town located in the state of Maine, United States. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, in the Kennebec Valley region. The town is bordered by the towns of Moscow, Parkman, and Harmony to the north, Mayfield to the east, and Anson to the south. The population of Bingham was 1,717 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Bingham was first settled in 1790 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1817 and named after William Bingham, a prominent Philadelphia merchant and statesman.
In the 19th century, Bingham was a thriving lumber town. The town was home to several sawmills, gristmills, and a tannery. The town also had a thriving agricultural industry, with dairy farms, apple orchards, and vegetable farms.

Geography

Bingham is located at 44°37'N 69°59'W (44.6167, -69.9833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.2 square miles, of which 34.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles is water.
The town is located in the Kennebec Valley region of Maine. The town is bordered by the towns of Moscow, Parkman, and Harmony to the north, Mayfield to the east, and Anson to the south.

Economy

Bingham is a rural town with a small economy. The town is home to several small businesses, including a few restaurants, a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few small retail stores. The town is also home to a few small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 49.2 people per square mile. There were 745 housing units at an average density of 21.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
