Mekoryuk Summary

Mekoryuk is a small city located on Nunivak Island in the Bering Sea, off the coast of Alaska. It is the only permanent settlement on the island, and is home to a population of approximately 200 people. The city is part of the Bethel Census Area, and is located within the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta.

History

Mekoryuk has a long history of human habitation, with evidence of human activity dating back to at least 1000 BC. The area was first inhabited by the Nunivak Cup’ik people, who were semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers. The Cup’ik people were known for their unique culture and language, which is still spoken by some of the residents of Mekoryuk today.
The first recorded contact between the Cup’ik people and Europeans occurred in 1778, when the Russian explorer Vitus Bering visited the island. In the late 1800s, the island was visited by American whalers, who established a trading post in the area.
In the early 1900s, the United States government began to establish a presence in the area, and in 1912, the first school was built in Mekoryuk. In the 1950s, the city was incorporated, and in the 1960s, the first airstrip was built.

Geography

Mekoryuk is located on the western side of Nunivak Island, in the Bering Sea. The city is situated on a small bay, and is surrounded by mountains and tundra. The climate in the area is subarctic, with cold winters and mild summers.
The city is located within the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, which is a vast wetland area that is home to a variety of wildlife, including caribou, moose, and migratory birds. The delta is also home to a variety of fish, including salmon, whitefish, and Arctic char.

Economy
