Koyuk Summary

Koyuk is a small city located in the northwest corner of Alaska, United States. It is located on the Seward Peninsula, on the shores of Norton Sound, and is part of the Nome Census Area. The city has a population of about 500 people, and is the largest settlement in the region.

Geography

Koyuk is located at the mouth of the Koyuk River, which flows into Norton Sound. The city is situated on a flat plain, with the surrounding terrain consisting of rolling hills and low mountains. The climate is subarctic, with cold winters and mild summers. The average annual temperature is around 28°F (-2°C).
The city is accessible by air and sea. The nearest airport is located in Nome, about 40 miles (64 km) away. The nearest port is located in Unalakleet, about 60 miles (97 km) away.

History

Koyuk was first settled by the Inupiat people in the late 19th century. The city was officially incorporated in 1901. In the early 20th century, the city was a major trading center for the region, and was home to a number of businesses, including a general store, a hotel, and a saloon.
In the 1950s, the city began to decline as the population shifted to larger cities in the region. In the 1970s, the city was revitalized by the construction of a fish processing plant. The plant provided jobs for many of the city’s residents, and helped to revive the local economy.
