Kasaan Summary

Kasaan is a small unincorporated community located on the northern tip of Prince of Wales Island in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska. It is part of the Prince of Wales-Hyder Census Area and is located approximately 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Ketchikan. The population of Kasaan was estimated to be around 100 people in 2020.

History

Kasaan has a long and rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. The area was first inhabited by the Tlingit people, who had lived in the area for thousands of years prior to the arrival of Europeans. The Tlingit people were known for their fishing and hunting skills, and they used the area’s abundant resources to sustain their way of life.

In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia, and the area around Kasaan was included in the purchase. In the late 19th century, the area was settled by European immigrants, primarily from Scandinavia. These settlers established a fishing and logging industry in the area, and the town of Kasaan was founded in 1891.

In the early 20th century, Kasaan became a hub for the salmon canning industry. The town was home to several canneries, and the industry provided employment for many of the town’s residents. The canneries also provided a source of income for the town, as the canned salmon was shipped to markets around the world.

In the mid-20th century, the salmon canning industry began to decline, and the town’s economy shifted to logging and tourism. The town is now home to several small businesses, including a general store, a post office, and a few restaurants.

Geography

Kasaan is located on the northern tip of Prince of Wales Island in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska. The town is situated on the western shore of Kasaan Bay, which is part of the Inside Passage. The bay is surrounded by steep mountains and dense forests, and the town is located at the mouth of the Kasaan River.
