It is located approximately 40 miles northeast of Anchorage and is part of the Anchorage Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Meadow Lakes was 1,845.

History

Meadow Lakes was first settled in the early 1900s by homesteaders who were attracted to the area by its abundant natural resources. The area was originally known as "Meadow Creek" and was home to a small community of farmers and ranchers. In the 1950s, the area was developed as a recreational area and the name was changed to Meadow Lakes.

Geography

Meadow Lakes is located at 61°25'N 149°25'W (61.4167, -149.4167). It is situated in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, approximately 40 miles northeast of Anchorage. The CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles, all of which is land.

Economy

Meadow Lakes is primarily a residential community, with most of its residents commuting to Anchorage for work. The area is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a gas station, and a few restaurants. The local economy is also supported by tourism, as the area is a popular destination for outdoor recreation.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 517 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 222.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 4.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 4.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $63,958, and the median income for a family was $71,250. Males had a median income of $50,000 versus $37,500 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $27,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and none of those age 65 or over.
