McGrath Summary

McGrath, Alaska is a small city located in the interior of Alaska, approximately 200 miles west of Anchorage. It is situated on the banks of the Kuskokwim River, and is the gateway to the Kuskokwim Mountains. The city has a population of approximately 500 people, and is the hub of the Kuskokwim River Valley.

History

McGrath was originally inhabited by the Koyukon Athabascan people, who have lived in the area for thousands of years. The first non-native settlers arrived in the late 1800s, and the town was officially established in 1902. The town was named after an early settler, John McGrath, who was a prospector and trapper.
McGrath was an important stop on the Iditarod Trail, which was used by miners and prospectors during the gold rush of the late 1800s. The town was also a major trading post for the Koyukon people, who traded furs and other goods with the settlers.
In the early 1900s, McGrath was a bustling town, with a population of over 1,000 people. The town had a school, a post office, a general store, and several saloons. However, the population began to decline in the 1920s, as the gold rush ended and the Iditarod Trail was abandoned. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 200 people.
