Attu Station Summary

Attu Station is a small unincorporated community located on the westernmost tip of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. It is the only community on the island of Attu, and is the westernmost settlement in the United States. Attu Station is located on the northern shore of Massacre Bay, and is the site of the former U.S. Army base, Fort Morrow.

History

Attu Station was first established in 1942 as a U.S. Army base, Fort Morrow, during World War II. The base was used to defend the Aleutian Islands from Japanese forces, and was home to the 11th Airborne Division. After the war, the base was abandoned and the island was largely uninhabited until the 1970s, when a small fishing village was established. The village was later renamed Attu Station.

Geography

Attu Station is located on the northern shore of Massacre Bay, on the westernmost tip of the Aleutian Islands. The island is approximately 11 miles long and 4 miles wide, and is surrounded by the Bering Sea. The terrain is mostly flat, with some hills and mountains in the interior. The climate is cold and wet, with temperatures ranging from -10°F in the winter to 50°F in the summer.
