Xenia Summary

Xenia is a small village located in Clay County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,068 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Effingham, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Xenia was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Xenia, Ohio. The village was named after the Ohio town, which in turn was named after the ancient Greek city of Xenia. The first post office was established in 1855.

Geography

Xenia is located at 39°17'25" North, 88°25'45" West (39.290278, -88.429167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Xenia is a small rural village with a limited economy. The village is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village also has a few small manufacturing companies.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,068 people, 431 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,521.4 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 663.3 per square mile (255.7/km2).
