Wataga Summary

Wataga is a small village located in Knox County, Illinois, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. Wataga is located in the heart of the Midwest, just south of Galesburg, Illinois. The village is situated on the banks of the Spoon River, a tributary of the Illinois River.

History

Wataga was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Wataga Creek, which runs through the area. The creek was named after the Native American tribe that once lived in the area. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the village quickly grew to include a post office, a school, a church, and a general store.
In the late 19th century, Wataga was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The village also had a railroad station, which connected Wataga to the larger cities of Galesburg and Peoria.

Wataga is located at 40°51'25" North, 90°17'45" West (40.856944, -90.295833). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Wataga's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a creamery. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a grocery store, and a hardware store.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 517 people, 206 households, and 140 families residing in the village. The population density was 862.5 people per square mile (333.3/km2). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
