Waltonville Summary

Waltonville is a small village located in Jefferson County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Big Muddy River, about 10 miles south of Mount Vernon. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Waltonville was founded in 1837 by William Walton, a settler from Kentucky. He purchased the land from the federal government and named the village after himself. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Waltonville was a thriving agricultural community in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The village was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.

Geography

Waltonville is located at 38°20'25"N 88°59'45"W (38.340278, -88.995833). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
