Victoria Summary
Victoria is a small town located in Lawrence County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Embarras River, approximately 10 miles south of Lawrenceville. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.
History
Victoria was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. The town was named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. The first post office was established in 1838.
Victoria was an important stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, which ran through the town from 1854 to 1971. The railroad brought economic growth to the area, and the town grew rapidly. By the late 19th century, Victoria had become a thriving agricultural center, with a population of over 1,000.
Geography
Victoria is located at 38°41'25" North, 87°45'45" West (38.690278, -87.762500). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all land.
Economy
Victoria's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile. There were 229 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
