Vergennes Summary

Vergennes is a small village located in the state of Illinois, in the United States. It is situated in the southeastern corner of the state, in the county of Vermilion. The village is located on the banks of the Vermilion River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The population of Vergennes was estimated to be 1,072 in the year 2000.

History

Vergennes was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Danville. The settlers named the village after the French naval hero, Admiral Comte de Vergennes. The village was incorporated in 1867, and the first mayor was elected in 1868.
The village grew slowly over the years, and by the turn of the 20th century, it had become a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a number of other businesses.
