Valier Summary

Valier is a small village located in Franklin County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, about 25 miles east of Benton. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Valier was founded in 1858 by William Valier, a French immigrant who had come to the area in search of a better life. He purchased a large tract of land and began to develop it into a small farming community. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1872.
Valier was a thriving agricultural community for many years, with a variety of crops being grown in the area. The town also had a number of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, and a post office.
In the early 1900s, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it and the population began to move away. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 200 people.

Geography

Valier is located at 38°25'25" North, 89°17'45" West (38.423, -89.296). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Valier's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay.

Valier also has a few small businesses including a gas station a restaurant and a grocery store

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile. There were 229 housing units at an average density of 377.5 per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
