Troy Summary
Troy, Illinois is a city located in Madison County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area. The population was 18,033 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Madison County.
History
Troy was founded in 1819 by settlers from Kentucky and Virginia. The city was named after the ancient city of Troy, located in modern-day Turkey. The city was incorporated in 1837.
Troy was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North. The city was also a major center of the abolitionist movement in the mid-19th century.
Troy was the site of the first public school in Madison County, established in 1845. The city was also home to the first public library in the county, established in 1853.

Troy is located at 38°51′N 89°51′W (38.851, -89.851). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Troy is home to a variety of businesses and industries. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Troy Industries, a manufacturer of firearms and accessories; and Troy Corporation, a manufacturer of automotive parts.

As of the 2010 census, there were 18,033 people, 6,945 households, and 4,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,037.3 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 7,541 housing units at an average density of 851.3 per square mile (328.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 6,945 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
