Towanda Summary

Towanda is a small village located in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Towanda was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Towanda, Pennsylvania, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1855.
Towanda was incorporated as a village in 1867. The village was a stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad, which was built in 1871. The railroad brought new businesses and people to the area, and the village grew rapidly.
