Topeka Summary

Topeka is a small village located in the state of Illinois, in the United States. It is located in the northern part of the state, in the county of LaSalle. The village is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, and is part of the Ottawa-Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Topeka was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Topeka was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “Vermilionville”, and was later renamed “Topeka” in 1837. The name “Topeka” is derived from the Native American word “topeka”, which means “to be at peace”.
The village was incorporated in 1867, and the first mayor was William H. Smith. The village was a major stop on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, and the railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village.

Geography

Topeka is located at 41°17'25" North, 88°51'45" West (41.290278, -88.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The village is located in the northern part of the state, in the county of LaSalle. The Vermilion River flows through the village, and the village is part of the Ottawa-Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.

Economy

The economy of Topeka is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, and the surrounding area is known for its production of corn, soybeans, and wheat. The village is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 667.9 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
