History

Thornton was first settled in 1834 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the first settler, William Thornton. The village was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Thornton was a farming community, with many of the residents working in the nearby coal mines. The village was also home to a number of small businesses, including a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.

Thornton is located at 41°31'17" North, 87°41'17" West (41.5214, -87.6881). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all land.
