Thebes Summary

Thebes is a small village located in Alexander County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 20 miles south of Cairo. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Thebes was founded in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after the ancient Greek city of Thebes. The first post office was established in 1820. Thebes was incorporated as a village in 1872.
Thebes was a major port on the Mississippi River during the 19th century. It was a major shipping point for cotton, lumber, and other goods. The town was also a major stop on the Cairo and Vincennes Railroad.

Geography

Thebes is located at 37°7′17″N 89°17′17″W (37.1214, -89.2881). According to the 2010 census, Thebes has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
Thebes is located on the banks of the Mississippi River. The town is surrounded by farmland and woodlands. The nearest major city is Cairo, located about 20 miles to the north.

Economy

Thebes is a small, rural community with a limited economy. The town is home to a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few small manufacturing plants.
Thebes is also home to a few tourist attractions, including the Thebes Historical Museum and the Thebes Lock and Dam. The town is also home to the Thebes State Fish and Wildlife Area, which offers fishing, hunting, and other outdoor activities.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 149 families residing in Thebes. The population density was 602.2 people per square mile (232.3/km2). There were 246 housing units at an average density of 271.7 per square mile (105.1/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
