Tamaroa Summary

Tamaroa is a small village located in Perry County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Tamaroa was 1,039 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Tamaroa was first settled in the early 1800s by French and German immigrants. The village was originally known as “Tamarack”, after the tamarack tree, which was abundant in the area. The name was later changed to Tamaroa, after the Native American tribe of the same name.
The village was officially incorporated in 1872. During the late 19th century, Tamaroa was a thriving river port, with a large number of steamboats and barges docking at the town’s wharf. The town was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store.
In the early 20th century, the town’s economy began to decline as the river traffic decreased. The Great Depression further weakened the town’s economy, and many of the businesses closed.

Tamaroa is located at 38°17′N 89°45′W (38.28, -89.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The village is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 20 miles south of St. Louis, Missouri. The nearest major city is Carbondale, Illinois, which is located about 25 miles to the east.
