Stonefort Summary

History

Stonefort is a small village located in Saline County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Little Wabash River, about 10 miles south of Harrisburg. The village was founded in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky, led by William Stone. The settlers were attracted to the area by the abundance of timber and the fertile soil.
The village was originally known as Stone’s Fort, but the name was later changed to Stonefort. The village was incorporated in 1854 and the first post office was established in 1855.
The village grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the turn of the 20th century, it had a population of around 500 people. The village was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a sawmill, and a grist mill.
The village was also home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Baptist Church, and the Presbyterian Church.
