Steeleville is a small city located in Randolph County, Illinois, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the state, about 40 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Steeleville was 2,619 at the 2010 census.

History

Steeleville was founded in 1819 by William Steele, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1872. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for coal mining and timber production. The town was also home to a number of factories, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a furniture factory.

Steeleville is located at 38°14'25" North, 89°45'45" West (38.240278, -89.7625). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles, all land.
