History

Staunton was founded in 1837 by William Staunton, a settler from Kentucky. The city was named after him. The first post office was established in 1838. The first school was built in 1839. The first church was built in 1841.
Staunton was incorporated as a village in 1867 and as a city in 1872. The city was a major stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad, which ran through the city from 1853 to 1971.

Staunton is located at 39°1′N 89°45′W (39.0167, -89.7500). According to the 2010 census, Staunton has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Staunton is a major agricultural center in the region. The city is home to several large farms, including the Staunton Farm, which is one of the largest in the state. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including the Staunton Manufacturing Company, which produces agricultural equipment.
