Smithton Summary

History

The small town of Smithton, Illinois is located in St. Clair County, about 25 miles east of St. Louis. It was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Kentucky, led by William Smith. The town was named after Smith, who was a prominent local businessman and politician.
