Royalton was founded in 1858 by William and Mary Ann Royal. The village was named after the Royals, who were the first settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1859.

The economy of Royalton is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including the Royal Farms, which is the largest farm in the area.
The village also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (456.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 507.3 per square mile (196.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
