Ridgway Summary

Ridgway is a small village located in Gallatin County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Wabash River, approximately 25 miles east of Mount Vernon. The population of Ridgway was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Ridgway was founded in 1819 by William Ridgway, a Revolutionary War veteran. He purchased the land from the federal government and named the village after himself. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Ridgway was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was built in the early 1800s. The canal was used to transport goods and people between the Ohio and Wabash Rivers. The canal was abandoned in the late 1800s, but the village still retains its historic charm.

Geography

Ridgway is located at 37°51'25"N 88°17'45"W (37.856944, -88.295833). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all land.
