Raleigh Summary

Raleigh is a small village located in the southwestern corner of St. Clair County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 10 miles south of Belleville and 25 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and covers an area of 0.6 square miles.

History

Raleigh was founded in 1818 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The village was named after the state of North Carolina, which was the home state of many of the settlers. The first settlers were primarily farmers and the village was largely agricultural in nature. The village was incorporated in 1872 and the first mayor was elected in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Raleigh was a thriving community with a variety of businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.

Geography

Raleigh is located in southwestern St. Clair County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 10 miles south of Belleville and 25 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land.
The village is located in the Central Till Plains region of Illinois, which is characterized by flat terrain and fertile soils. The climate is humid continental, with hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters.
