History

Pekin was founded in 1824 by William H. Hawkins, who named the city after Peking, China. The city was incorporated in 1845 and was designated as the county seat of Tazewell County in 1847.
Pekin was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and was home to several prominent abolitionists. In 1854, the city was the site of the first public school in Tazewell County.

The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
